About Ancient Tibetan Healing - "Soul Retrieval & Long-life Ceremony"

Tibetan Bön Buddhism has many healing rituals. Among them is the ritual known as Soul Retrieval and Long-Life Ceremony (Lalu Chilu). This is performed for those whose life force has been diminished or damaged. In order to have a healthy life, inner life force, soul or La must be strong. Just as we catch all kind of diseases when our immunity is weak, we become vulnerable when our La is weak or diminished.

When problems are caused by external negative influences, this ceremony is performed. It reinforces the power of the five elements which are the foundation of our body, mind and spirit or life force.

"Soul Retrieval & Long-life Ceremony"

The Soul Retrieval Ritual returns to us any qualities or elements of our soul that may have been separated from us, and also reinforces the force and power of the five elements which are the foundation of our soul and life force. Through the use of ritual offerings, mantra and meditation, the external forces no longer negatively impact our lives.

A Deeper Perspective

The soul (la) can be considered to be part of a triad that together constitute life energy: la, ni and sem. Within the triad of la, ni and sem: “La” is the vital elemental energies; “Ni” is the vitality of the life force, which holds together the subtle and physical energies (described as the lifespan); and “Sem” is the consciousness.

Description of Loss of Life Force or Soul Loss

The loss of life-force is known as soul-loss, and this can take place when we have suffered: trauma, accidents, abuse, great stress, emotional wounds or upheaval, death of a loved one, separation from a significant other, a pervasive period of difficult circumstances, or from chronic illness. Tibetan Soul Retrieval is a powerful method for calling back and restoring your life force and healing energies.

Symptoms of Loss of Life Force or Soul Loss

  1. Inability to fully heal or get well.

  2. Chronic illness.

  3. Unhealthy or uncontrollable emotional swings, including but not limited to, depression, anger, anxiety, anxious and panic attacks.

  4. Pervasive fear.

  5. Lack of trust or faith.

  6. Feeling disconnected or spaced out.

  7. Loss of energy, inspiration or enthusiasm.

  8. Negative thoughts or thinking.

  9. Inability to relax or manage stress, or to cope.

  10. Lack of mental clarity or insight to get through life challenges.

  11. The inability to overcome, instead of the ability of being overwhelmed.

The Soul Retrieval Ceremony

Within the soul retrieval ceremony, the three parts of the soul each have a symbolic expression. La is represented by a piece of turquoise. Turquoise, in Tibetan tradition, is closely connected with soul energy. During the ceremony, turquoise rests with the figure of a deer, which serves as an intermediary, supporting the soul retrieval work. When the core ceremony has been completed, there is then a divination. The deer figure journeys within an ocean of milk. If it comes to rest in a propitious position, the ceremony has been successful. Ni, within the ceremony, is represented by the syllable Ni. Sem is represented by an arrow that is used to stir the ocean of milk prior to the deer's journey.

What Occurred at the Event

The practice culminated in the Soul Retrieval Ritual. As part of this, three tests were performed to determine the efficacy of the ritual:

  1. An effigy of “Deer” holding objects that represented our soul (Lha), our lifespan, and our life-force, was spun counterclockwise in an “Ocean of Milk.” The final direction of the effigy determined a positive result upon the group’s soul, lifespan and vital life-force, as the Deer effigy stopped spinning while looking toward the students.

  2. After this, a black and white pebble were fished from the “Ocean of Milk” three times. The “white” pebble was drawn three times, and reflected a positive, favorable outcome.

  3. For the final test, “White and Black Die" were rolled. On the first attempt, the white had a higher number, which meant a positive result.

There was also a “Soul Ransom Ritual, in which the beings of lower worlds

are appeased with a ransom of offerings that release their effects.

During the "Soul Retrieval and Long Life" Ceremony

The only role that the recipient has is to receive the healing. Optimally, to receive this healing energy, it’s important to keep an open mind and heart, and stay connected with this openness during the ceremony.

After the Soul Retrieval and Long Life Ceremony

It's extremely important you allow yourself the necessary space and time for the returned life-force and healing energies to fully integrate.

  • For some it may be quiet reflection; and others may want to be in nature- countryside, beach, water or in the parks. Nature is a wonderful healer, being in nature, enjoying the beauty of the outdoors, of the Earth, will help the soul-parts to integrate with the recipient.

  • Music is also important- beautiful sounds help to restore our dissonant energy fields.

Students were given a Healing Meditation for daily practice, and the "Long Life Mantra" to restore and strengthen innate healing energy.

Our Thanks, Love and Kind Karma to Geshe Nyima Kunchap!!
